Glaucoma
Overview

What you need to know about glaucoma.

Both cataracts and glaucoma can be a natural part of the aging process. Many people over 60 may have both, but the two conditions are not related — glaucoma does not cause cataracts and cataracts do not cause glaucoma. Both are serious conditions that can cause vision loss; however, vision loss from cataracts can be reversed with surgery, while vision loss from glaucoma is irreversible.

The Social Security Administration evaluates glaucoma under the special senses listings. Approval may be based on visual acuity of 20/200 or worse in the better eye, on visual field limitation of 20 degrees or less, or on a reduced visual efficiency or impairment value.

We help clients gather ophthalmology records, visual field testing, and treating-source statements to document the level of vision loss and its impact on the ability to work.
